Cincinnati, Ohio, October 13, 2006 -- The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded 14 grants totaling $202,000 to Greater Cincinnati non-profit organizations in September.
Grant recipients:
Boys & Girls Club of Greater Cincinnati, $10,000. Project Learn, a program designed to provide urban core children with academic and literacy support and tutoring on a daily basis to boost academic and social self-esteem levels. Carnegie Arts Center, $5,000.
Arts Education Partnership with Covington Independent Public Schools, including six individual programs targeting disadvantaged children in pre-school and grades three through five.
Catholic Inner-City Schools Education Fund, $30,000. Outreach basketball program that provides coaching and lessons in sportsmanship to students in Cincinnati’s West End area.
Cincinnati Arts Association, $10,000. Ticket and transportation assistance that allows students from low income families to attend performances at Aronoff Center and Music Hall, and the Overture Awards program that connects students with professional artists for counseling and guidance.
Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra, $25,000. Sound Discoveries: Music for Life, Music for the Community and Music for a Career, a comprehensive, standards-based that involves musicians and guest artists in the educational life of children throughout the region.
Franciscan Haircuts from the Heart, $5,000. A program that provides free hair care services to children living at the poverty level through a walk-in salon in Over-the-Rhine and a vouchers redeemable at other locations.
Great Rivers Girl Scout Council, $2,000. Girl Scouting During the School Day extends the basic Girl Scout program to young people living in economically disadvantaged areas where safety issues are prevalent.
Inner City Youth Opportunities, $25,000. Year-Round Tennis Program that combines tennis instruction with academic intervention and youth development to help inner-city children develop life and social skills and improve their academic abilities.
Know Theatre Tribe, $5,000. Know-to-Go Education Series, a program that emphasizes diversity and brings the arts to young people by touring to area schools and other public venues in the tri-state area.
The Literacy Network of Greater Cincinnati, $5,000. Children’s Basic Reading Program, providing assistance to children with severe reading difficulties or symptoms of dyslexia.
Our Daily Bread, $15,000. Kids Café, a three-days-week afternoon program providing a well-balanced meal, crafts, games, outings and other fun activities for inner-city children.
Starfire Council of Greater Cincinnati, $40,000. Community Commitment, a program that enables persons with disabilities to develop their full potential through service to the community, informal education and social interaction. The grant will provide for 7,300 hours of community service.
University of Cincinnati Med Mentors, $10,000. A program involving 180 medical students who volunteer to mentor young people through outings to local cultural venues special events that they would otherwise have the opportunity to attend.
YMCA of Greater Cincinnati, $15,000. Health Education Program providing innovative instruction to nearly 1,000 children ages six to 13 in Cincinnati Catholic inner-city schools (CISE).
The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs. The private foundation was established in 1985 by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death. The foundation has made more than 1,500 grants totaling over $23 million.
