Dater Foundation Awards College Scholarships to Dater High Graduates

Cincinnati, Ohio, May 9, 2013 – Six graduating seniors at Gilbert A. Dater High School in Western Hills are the 2013 recipients of college scholarships provided by the Foundation. This year's winners were announced May 9 at the school's Senior Awards Night.

Scholarship recipients, along with the schools they plan to attend, are:

Dina Ballard – Ohio State University (Journalism)
Brittany Mechley  -- University of Cincinnati (Marketing)
Jazmine Mincy --  Tuskegee University (Pre-veterinary Medicine)
Korea Smith -- University of Cincinnati (Pre-dentistry)
Robert Williams -- Asbury University (undecided)
Armani Yett – University of Toledo (Communication Arts)

The scholarship awards are for $2,500 annually and are renewable annually as long as recipients make progress toward graduation. The scholarships are awarded through the Cincinnati Scholarship Foundation, which selects recipients in consultation with the school.

Before Dater High School existed and graduated its first class, the Foundation gave scholarships totaling $450,000 between 1995 and 2003 to graduating seniors at other high schools who had attended Dater Junior High.  The Foundation has made a $50,000 grant annually since 2004 in providing scholarships to graduating Dater High seniors.

The scholarship awards continue a long relationship between the Dater Foundation and the school that bears the name of Charles Dater's grandfather Gilbert. When Dater Junior High gave way to Dater Montessori, then-Principal Dr. Beverly Eby convinced the school district to establish a college preparatory school on the west side of Cincinnati. Original plans called for another name, but Dr. Eby enlisted the Foundation's support and the school was allowed to retain the Dater name. The class of 2013 is the school's 10th graduating class.

The Foundation has provided funds to support other programs and initiatives at the school, a SummerBridge program, college resource center, culinary arts programs, furnishings as part of the recent renovation project, and annual support to fund incentives and other student activities.  The Foundation donated portraits of Gilbert Dater and Charles Dater, and these paintings hang near the school’s main entrance. -- Six graduating seniors at Gilbert Dater High School in Western Hills are the 2013 recipients of college scholarships provided by the Foundation.
