Children’s Basic Reading Program

The mission of the Literacy Network is to champion the development of literacy in the individual, family, workplace, school and the community, by raising awareness, improving access and serving as a catalyst for literacy efforts.  Reading programs combating illiteracy are offered free of charge to adults and children.  A Dater grant supported the Children’s Basic Reading Program, which utilizes the Orton-Gillingham multi-sensory approach to teach students in grades K-5 with profound reading difficulties or symptoms of dyslexia.  Students receive approximately 240 hours of free instruction over two years.  This resource would typically cost over $7,000 per year, more than most families can afford.  Students completing the program historically increase an average of two grade levels in their reading skills and often report increased confidence inside and outside the classroom.  By partnering with organizations like the Dater Foundation, the Literacy Network was able to offer 17 of these specialized reading classes in the 2017-18 academic year.
