Leadership Development Camp

Complementing the Red Cross’ primary mission of preventing and alleviating human suffering in the face of emergencies, the organization is dedicated to improving community assets and resiliency. Since 1983, the Red Cross has hosted the summer Leadership Development Camp (LDC) for high school students from the Greater Cincinnati region.  LDC 2018 was held July 12-15 on the campus of Xavier University. One hundred thirty-three campers representing 70 schools participated, under the leadership of 34 additional high school peer counselors and 30 college student counselors (LDC alumni). The four-day, three-night camp curriculum focused on skill-building topics including effective communication, goal setting, time management, problem solving, innovative thinking, college preparedness, self-esteem building, ethics, and volunteerism.  The campers came as strangers but left with new friendships.  Many campers were from low-to-moderate income families (more than 50% required sponsorship support to attend camp). Results demonstrate that LDC effectively empowered the diverse group of youth to recognize their leadership potential, using their new skills to take on new roles in their schools and communities. This past year’s camp theme proclaimed that there is “No Limit to Leadership”. One camper embraced that sentiment, writing in the post-camp evaluation “I feel like I can do so much more now than I’ve ever done before”.
