Kids Club

Our Daily Bread’s Kids Club provides year-round afternoon activities and homework help for kids age 5-12 who live in the Over the Rhine neighborhood. A Dater grant supported operations which help to provide a caring, stable environment for kids to play, learn, craft, do homework and eat a healthy snack. In addition, the Our Family Table program provides a bag of groceries each Thursday to help Kids Club participants augment their family’s food supply over the weekend when they are not able to rely on free school lunches. Kids club supports 25 children.

A Kids Club Success Story ... Working hard at play

“Play is the work of childhood.” – Mr. Rogers
T is a chef. He cooks and serves creative dishes, wearing the apron he got from Santa. He also practices law out of his kitchen. Not bad for a five-year-old.
R is a teacher. Her class is rowdy and out of control. At first, she hollered and yelled, but then she learned that if she wants her students to respect her, she has to lower her voice and stay calm. R is 8 years old. The kids of Kids Club work hard at playing.

When a child is truly engaged in play, they let themselves be vulnerable. They are experimenting with ways of interacting with the world and with each other. They are making mistakes and learning. Before they can abandon themselves completely to imagination, their reality must first be safe.
Kids Club provides the bedrock necessary for a roller coaster made out of chairs, cranky baby dolls and a crowded veterinarian office. It is a space for dinosaurs and race cars, bank robberies and theater. It is two and a half hours precious hours a day when kids can relax and participate in the beautiful work they were born to do.
