A highlight of the Senior Awards Program at Gilbert A. Dater High School May 15 was the announcement of the six Charles H. Dater Foundation scholarship recipients for the Class of 2006.

br>Students and their parents waited anxiously as Foundation Officers and Directors Bruce Krone and Jack Frank announced the recipients of $2,500 scholarship awards, which are renewable annually as long as progress is made toward graduation.

br>The scholarships are awarded through the Cincinnati Scholarship Fund, which selects recipients in consultation with the school. The scholarship recipients, with the school they will attend and planned course of study:

span>br>Channelle Bonds - Bowling Green State University, nursing or business.

br>Derris Cameron, Bowling Green State University, education or human resources.
/span>
br>Amber Hornsby – considering University of Cincinnati, Thomas More or Northern Kentucky; pre-pharmacy.
John Kerkhoff – Ohio University, journalism.
Steven Sherritt – University of Cincinnati, College of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning.
Sarah Un – University of Cincinnati or Cincinnati State, undecided.
The scholarship awards continue a long relationship between the Dater Foundation and the school that bears the name of Charles Dater’s grandfather Gilbert.When Dater Junior High gave way to Dater Montessori, Principal Dr. Beverly Eby convinced the school district to establish a college preparatory school on the west side of Cincinnati. Original plans called for another name, but Dr. Eby enlisted the Foundation’s support and the school was allowed to retain the Dater name.
The class of 2006 is the school’s fourth graduating class, and they are raising eyebrows in education circles. Ninety-five percent of the 107 graduating seniors plan to attend college, and they were offered scholarship awards of more than $700,000.
