Cincinnati, Ohio, February 13, 2015 -- The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded five grants totaling $40,000 in January, continued support for Historic Southwest Ohio and its Heritage Village Museum and the outreach programs for young people.

Visitors experience the rural simplicity of a small town life as it was in Ohio during the 1800’s.  Volunteers provide guided tours, supervise gift and book shop, coordinate special events, demonstrate traditional crafts and cooking, and present educational programs for over 19,000 guests each year.

Grants made in January:

American National Red Cross, $10,000.  Leadership Development Camp for 150-200 rising eighth grade through high school juniors.  High school and college counselors volunteer their time to select participants and serve at the four day, three night summer camp held at Xavier University.

Arthritis Foundation Great Lakes Region, $5,000.  Kids Get Arthritis Too, a program that includes a Fall Family Camp and backpacks filled with educational materials and other information about resources and support for children with arthritis and their parents.

Historic Southwest Ohio, $10,000.  Education programs and outreach focusing on history and life in the 19th century for 5,000-plus young people in kindergarten through high school.

Ohio River Foundation, $10,000. River Explorer and the School Outdoor Habitats are hands-on programs that introduce more than 4,000 schoolchildren to the benefits of environmental stewardship. Participation has doubled since 2009.

Transitions Inc., $5,000.  The Hermes Avenue Project provides housing for homeless families with children and the Healthy Newborn House provides transitional housing for pregnant woman and new mothers who are participating in residential treatment.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 2,500 grants totaling over $38 million since its inception in 1985.
