Dater Foundation Awards 10 Grants in December

Cincinnati, Ohio, January 20, 2015 -- The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded 10 grants totaling $100,000 in December, including $10,000 to ROKCincy (Roundabout Opera for Kids), which taps into the talents and generosity of pre-professional volunteer singers and brings fully-staged, kid-friendly opera to schools and community centers at no charge.

Grants made in December:

Cincinnati Arts Association, $10,000.  Artists on Tour brings talented artists-educators directly into schools and youth organizations, enhancing learning with unique programs that vary in culture and art form.  A ticket transportation subsidy fund supports SchoolTime performances for students at the Aronoff Center.

Cincinnati Ballet, $10,000.  Cincy Dance!, a collaborative effort between the Ballet and local schools that provides free, long-term dance instruction to at-risk students in the community. The three-phase program includes in-school dance instruction as well as scholarships to a more intensive training program.

Cincinnati Boychoir, $10,000.  Arts Access provides tuition support to boys from underserved communities, as well as opportunities through Cincinnati Sings and the day-long All-City Boychoir Festival.

Freestore Foodbank, $15,000.   Power Pack Upgrade, providing enhanced carry-home meals for children in low-income families to ensure they will have food over weekends and during holidays when school meals are not available.

Leadership Scholars, $10,000.  Middle School Mindset for College Success introduces seventh and eighth grade students to the non-cognitive skills that will improve their chance of academic success.  Trained high school juniors and seniors serve as mentors to the younger students.

Linton Music, $10,000.  Peanut Butter and Jam Sessions, a series of nearly 40 Saturday morning concerts presenting chamber music for pre-schoolers and their parents at locations throughout the region and including free concerts in inner-city neighborhoods.

Muscular Dystrophy Association, $5,000.  MDA Summer Camp, where children ages 6 to 17 with various neurological diseases are able enjoy typical childhood activities as accommodations are made for their illnesses and counselors provide assistance.

Notre Dame Urban Education Center, $10,000.  After-school and summer academic enrichment program in which students in high poverty areas and low performing schools in Covington and Newport get one hour of one-on-one tutoring from volunteers.

ROKCincy, $10,000.  Roundabout Opera for Kids (ROK) connects eager grade school audiences to opera through high quality outreach programs presented by volunteer student and other performers and provided to schools and centers at no charge.

Salvation Army, $10,000.  The Learning Center provides comprehensive after-school and summer programming that includes informal education, music, sports and conflict resolution for young people in Price Hill and adjacent communities.

The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs.  Information about the grantmaking process and guidelines and links to an online grant application website are available at www.DaterFoundation.org.

The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death.  The foundation has made more than 2,500 grants totaling over $38 million since its inception in 1985.
