13 Grants Awarded in February
Cincinnati, Ohio, February 26, 2010 -- The Charles H. Dater Foundation awarded 13 grants totaling $166,000 in February, including two grants that provide significant support for the fourteenth consecutive year to the Learning Links and Summertime Kids programs that are coordinated by the Greater Cincinnati Foundation.
Grants made in February:
Boys & Girls Club of Greater Cincinnati, $10,000. Project Learn, providing urban core children with academic and literacy support and tutoring on a daily basis to boost academic and social self-esteem levels.
Cincinnati Museum Center, $20,000. Children’s Museum, which serves young people and families with 1,800 hours of exciting, education and age-appropriate programming throughout the year.
East End Adult Education, $10,000. A free GED education program that targets young people and adults who have dropped out of school and need credentials to improve their opportunity for success in life.
Franciscan Haircuts from the Heart, $6,000. A program that provides free hair care services to children living at the poverty level through a walk-in salon in Over-the-Rhine and a vouchers redeemable at other locations.
Learning Links, $40,000. A program of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation that funds small grants to teachers and other educators allowing them to provide creative programs or special events for more than 20,000 area students.
Historic Southwest Ohio, $10,000. Support of education programs for young people in kindergarten through high school focusing on history and life in the 19th century.
Literacy Network of Greater Cincinnati, $5,000. Children’s Basic Reading Program, providing assistance to children with severe reading difficulties or symptoms of dyslexia.
One Way Farm of Fairfield, 10,000. Animal Education and Therapy Program, utilizing the unconditional love of animals to provide comfort and support to abused and at-risk children.
School House Symphony, $5,000. Teaching Tomorrow’s Audience Today, featuring more than 250 up-close and interactive music education programs at elementary and pre-schools throughout the region.
Summertime Kids, $30,000. A program administered through a volunteer committee of the Greater Cincinnati Foundation that enables local nonprofit organizations to provide summer activities such as field trips, day camps, gardening, arts and crafts for deserving young people.
Friends of Sunrock Farm, $10,000. Scholarship fund allowing children from low-income families to experience the joys of nature through field trips and day camps to an educational farm in Wilder, Ky.
Urban Health Project, $5,000. Summer internship stipends to medical students who learn socially-responsible community outreach as they work with non-profit organizations in Greater Cincinnati.
YMCA Clippard Branch, $5,000. Summer Campership for Needy Families, a program that provides scholarships to a week-long day camp throughout the summer.
The Dater Foundation makes grants to non-profit organizations in the Greater Cincinnati area to carry out programs that benefit children and focus in the areas of arts/culture, education, healthcare, social services and other community needs. The private foundation was established by fourth-generation Cincinnatian, businessman and philanthropist Charles Dater (1912-1993) to ensure that his resources would continue to fund worthwhile community programs after his death. The Foundation has made more than 1,900 grants totaling over $30 million since its founding in 1985.
